În urma unei experiențe traumatizante din timpul războiului, în care își pierde stăpânul, Max rămâne cu sechele. Nu mai răspunde la comenzi și se sperie de zgomote puternice, pe care le asociază exploziilor și focurilor de armă din război, și care îl fac să devină agresiv. Considerându-l inapt pentru a-și mai efectua misiunile de recunoaștere, armata decide să-l eutanasieze pe Max, însă familia lui Kyle acceptă să-l adopte.
